Booma Bow Ties, the Company
Booma Bow Ties is a boutique company specializing in custom made-to-order bow ties and pocket squares and custom fabric design services. The materials for our custom made bow ties are sourced from a variety of companies and each is part of a very limited run, so besides getting something handmade you will also have something unique! Our commissions have included the creation of a custom wedding fabric for use as table linens and wedding party apparel. In addition, the proprietors are devoted to basset hounds, so there is an array of custom fabric designs featuring hounds. The newest products include a line of fabric and bow ties featuring school colors.

Booma Bow Ties, the History
My grandfather, Roland Clayton Booma was a New England business man. He grew-up in Swampscott, Massachusetts and went to Dartmouth (Class of 1930). He returned to Swampscott and married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Margaret MacLean and started a home heating service company, just as people were converting their heating systems from coal to oil. He was a good salesman and part of that skill included always being put together and his bow tie was integral to his business persona and style. I inherited my first bow ties from my grandfather. At first as a kid, I wore them occasionally; I started wearing them exclusively when I went to boarding school in Connecticut. Now I wear one every day for work.
When people ask me why bow ties, I say they are very difficult to soil with ones lunch or a beverage. But actually, I found when I was beginning my work career in finance, I could always use the bow tie as a point of reference when calling someone on the telephone -- "you know I'm the guy with the bow tie" -- became an effective way to identify myself. I also tend to be a little on the shy side, so it was also a neutral way to remind people that thy had met me.
The first bow tie I offered for sale was the burgundy silk woven basset hound bow tie. I have a particular liking for basset hounds and couldn't find a basset hound bow tie. I reached out to a novelty bow tie company and while they did not want to add a basset hound bow tie to their collection, they did agree to make-up a batch of ties for me. As things evolved I began selling other custom made bow ties from fabrics that were readily available. As my business continued to evolve, I began working to find more unique fabrics (e.g, Burmese silk) and it was this through my efforts to get high quality-unique bow tie fabrics, that I discovered custom printed fabrics. Many of the ties I sell are made from fabrics I have designed. This, in turn, led me to the custom design fabric services that I now offer in addition the bow ties. I seek inspiration from the beauty around us and translate that, using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, into one-of-a-kind fabric designs that I have custom printed.
